About
My primary research interest is the connection between language and sexuality, taking a Sociocultural Linguistics approach. My current research is focused on an ethnographic investigation of a lesbian community of practice - the Sapphic Stompers. In the forthcoming monograph 'Dyke/Girl: Language and identities in a lesbian group' (Palgrave Macmillan), I use discourse analysis to explore the negotiation of mutual identity through interaction. I am also currently working with data from this project in order to explore and problematise the notion of 'female masculinity', and to advocate the use of the community of practice approach within queer linguistics.
Future research plans include a large-scale research project with young gay and lesbian people, exploring the relevance of feminism and the nature of queer culture on their identity construction. I am also involved with a research project into the discursive representation of marriage equality in the UK, alongside colleagues in the North and Midlands Gender and Language Research Group (https://sites.google.com/site/languagegendergroup/), and with a project investigating sexuality discourses in the secondary school curriculum (with Liz Morrish, Helen Sauntson and Kathryn Simpson).
In June 2012, I will be leaving Edge Hill to take up the post of Lecturer in Linguistics in the Department of Modern Languages at the University of Hull, UK.
